Where do we begin when assessing the needs of our loved ones? I pondered this question, thinking about myself as I age and what to express to my family while I still have my faculties. Most caregivers already understand the physical needs. As we age, care and vigilance grow, and we should know the psychological impact that aging can have. It bears repeating that every caregiver, new or experienced, should be mindful of the areas of importance to our loved ones.
Think about the importance of social engagement. Interacting with other elders helps reduce feelings of loneliness, especially after losing a spouse or significant other. Participating in activities outside the resident’s home (when possible) offers benefits. Small gatherings at home are also helpful for loved ones with mobility or transportation issues. Family relationships are essential for our elders, who may be experiencing memory loss. Next, focus on home safety, as many factors can compromise it. Falling is the main safety concern among older adults. Each year, millions experience falls. More than one in four seniors falls annually, and one fall raises the risk of future falls. Falls can also result from certain medications or mobility challenges. Be aware of the medications your loved one is taking. Finally, always show respect while providing care. Listen actively to their concerns and requests, and demonstrate empathy. Remember, we are all aging.
As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, I know that assessing the needs of our elderly loved ones is often neglected due to the focus on the obvious: their physical needs. Caregiving is holistic, which requires intentional assessments and interventions. Be Safe! Be Well!
