No Never Alone! The Cost of Assuming Elderly Loved-Ones are Safe

This is going to be a short and sweet discussion! I am going to say this loud enough to be heard around the world! This is a Public Service Announcement (PSA) from Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate!

Last week, on June 22nd, an elderly man was reported missing (by family) and today in my area, he was found, dead in the back of his apartment complex. Our police department’s drone technology got involved. They used a drone and spotted the 81-year-old’s body near a ravine and high grassy area behind his apartment building. The elderly man had many health issues that required daily medication according to the daughter that did not live with the parent. I know our parents and loved ones can be cantankerous and strive hard to hold on to their independence, however, sometimes it is necessary to declare time-out. Having a conversation with family and friends as our aging loved ones walk into their golden years, is so important.

Elderly parents living ALONE need surveillance, ESPECIALLY those with cognitive, behavioral, and health issues. By surveillance, I mean, in the same location. I know the reality of readjusting one’s life to care for a loved one, but it is necessary. It is vital! Do not be so busy with your LIFE that you do not pay attention to your elders! Safety should always be paramount when it comes to aging loved ones.

Please start the conversation early as to who is going to be responsible for your aging parents. It needs to be a team effort! As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, know that being a caregiver from afar can have costly consequences. What consequences are you willing to live with? There are options!
