Caring For Mothers This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a time to honor the beauty of motherhood. Mothers worried about and cared for us in the first spans of our lives. Many mothers are now cared for by loved ones in the later stages of their lives. Their wonder years deserve rest, grace, and joy. We are saluting and celebrating mothers who, by no fault of their own, require care, as we observe Mother’s Day. Children are making countless sacrifices, both male and female. The roles are reversed because of aging, chronic conditions, physical disabilities, vision and hearing challenges, and more. Through life’s highs and lows, mothers have always been there to support and love unconditionally. How do we make caring for mothers special this Mother’s Day?

Remind Them They’re Special

Everyone wants to feel special. When caring for an elder, including them matters. Ask them what they like, or what they want to do. This removes the burden mentality. What’s significant is that they’re providing their viewpoints and opinions.

Stay Connected With Family and Friends

Growing older can be isolating. Statistics show that aging parents who are isolated and lonely live shorter lives with increased risk for depression. Few things in life are as important to mothers as enjoying their independence. Mother needs to feel that she has a voice and is empowered to continue making her own decisions. Mother’s Day is a great day to have family and friends visit, play games, eat together, and reminisce. Connections matter, and there is no better day to connect than Mother’s Day.

Pampering Works

We all know how we love pampering. Mother’s Day is the day to pamper. Pedicures, manicures, facials, a new hairdo, or a spa day with calming music are all ways to make mothers feel special. And do not forget the flowers.

As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, aging loved ones remind us that time is all we have. You want your mother to enjoy life, whether aging in place at home or in a different living setting. Find spaces between the caregiving chaos to create wonderful moments this Mother’s Day. One final thought… if your mother is no longer with you, celebrate her memory with a photo or a special song she liked. For me, my mother’s song…It is Well With My Soul. Be Safe! Be Well!
