Celebrating Juneteenth carries remarkable meaning for our elders within the African American community. Many have stood the test of time and tell the stories of historic men and women whom we now stand on their shoulders. The struggle and resilience should always remind us that the journey for freedom and equality continues, even today.
Each year, during this season, many thoughts arise for African Americans. First, it’s a time to pause and remember the sacrifices made during the Civil Rights Movement. Second, reflecting on the loss of loved ones, their properties, and other cherished belongings should be shared with our children and their children. Third, for people who continue to fight for our liberties, we must express our gratitude, understanding that the struggle is far from over.
Advocacy is crucial for African Americans to embrace, especially in relation to our elders. We have learned that there is strength in numbers, and this is essential for the ongoing pursuit of justice and fairness. Juneteenth serves as a testament to the progress that has been made, as well as an opportunity to highlight the work that remains to be done.
Fun Fact: Juneteenth, observed yearly on June 19th, honors the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were told about their freedom by the Emancipation Proclamation, marking the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks a significant period in American Black history, one of celebration and advocacy for racial equality.
As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, here is your reminder that we all have a responsibility to share the importance of days like Juneteenth. Passing on history is necessary so we do not repeat the past. I encourage everyone to sit at the feet of our elders so we can pass on knowledge to the younger generation. We are our brother’s keeper. We are our sister’s keeper. We are our elders’ keepers. We are the keepers of history, freedom, and resilience. Celebrate, but never be silent. Be Safe! Be Well!
